Community Advisory Board records
Scope and Contents
The Community Advisory Board records document the creation and operations of the Board from its 1991 inception to 2020. Activities documented include outreach projects, task force meetings, and day-to-day administration. Much of the collection documents the Community Advisory Board’s meetings and includes minutes, agendas, and materials that were distributed to attendees. There are no meeting files among the records from March 1994 through November 1997. A significant topic covered in the collection is the “America’s Promise School Supplies Project,” which sought to distribute school supplies to economically disadvantaged elementary school students.
Note: The Community Advisory Board was previously named the Community and Friends Board before 2004 and these names are used interchangeably throughout the description of this collection.

Biographical / Historical
In 1991, the Community and Friends Board was created by the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and announced publicly by Chairman of the Board of Trustees, James D. Wolfensohn. The board was created to provide the Kennedy Center with advice and assistance from a local perspective in order to better serve the needs of the greater Washington area. The Community and Friends Board was made up of 45 members selected to represent the rich cultural diversity of its broader community. Between 1991 and 1993, the Board created six task forces to actively capitalize on the specific areas of knowledge of the Community Board’s members. The task forces include America’s Promise, Business, Community Arts and Artists, Education, Government Relations, and Marketing and Communications. In 2004, the Community and Friends Board was renamed the Community Advisory Board to better reflect the group’s advisory position.
